Be A Hero: What an Exciting Experience, It was..

EDUCATION YOUTH SUMMIT 2013The Education Youth Summit 2013 which held on Tuesday 26 March was organized by the Carrington Youth Fellowship Initiative (CYFI). An initiative of the US Consulate General, Lagos. It turned out to be an event which would linger in the hearts of the attendees for a long time.  The idea behind the event was to make the students understand that there is greatness in every student.

The summit themed “Be a hero” was an avenue for secondary school students to be addressed by those who are trailblazers in their respective fields, those who are role models because they have gone through thick and thin but have come out strong. The guests made the students to understand that it might be difficult at the beginning but if you press on you will definitely come out a stronger and better person.

Mr Efosa Obazee of Standard Chartered Bank discussed successful habits of a hero. He urged the students to develop discipline, commitment, focus and determination, as these are the attributes that would guarantee a bright future, these are the things that stand the test of time.

Dr (Mrs) Titi Akinlade of Exxon-Mobil encouraged the students to be focused, to have a goal, and a mindset to accomplish them. According to Mrs Joke Kujenya, the assistant editor, the Nations Newspaper, there is nothing that is beyond your reach except you don’t work towards it. She encouraged female students not to give in to the mentality of using their bodies to get what they want.

The event which featured a talk show, an award ceremony, drama and poem session, questions and answers and motivational speeches held at the Lagos State Education Resource Centre, Ojodu.

The keynote address was delivered by Mrs. Tosin Taiwo, a CYFI member and the award for the Best Youth Mentor and Mentee went to Mr Bimbo Ajibola and Nnadi Emmanuel respectively.

CYFI was represented by Deepa Sipes and Mr. Clemson Ayegbusi. Deepa gave the closing remarks, according to her she was pleased with the response from the students and school authorities. She talked about the importance of mentorship, and encouraged young people to surround themselves with positive-minded people, because everyone is a product of who we surround ourselves with. Also, in attendance were Mr Oluseyi Fasanya, Human Resources Manager, United Parcel Service; Mrs Tina Utoro, Creative Director, Catyna Ventures; Mrs Taiye Faloju, Standard Chartered Bank; and Prof. Moses Adetumbi, Author, “You are better than you think”.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Mrs Tosin Taiwo, she expressed her gratitude to all those who could attend the event, wishing all the guests a safe journey back to their respective destinations. It was an awesome experience.

It Gladdens their hearts..

We have been right here thankful for the fact that we have got some great volunteer Mentors who could go the extra miles to impact lives of younger generation. Once again, thanks to all our friends and members of this initiative.

From the feedback we have received so far, the youths appreciate your effort. And, it gladdens their heart to have such a 'Bigger Friend' like you. Thank you for your time shared.

As we have some few more weeks before the commencement of the West African Secondary School Examination, please do not hesitate to encourage the 'champion' in your Mentee.
